Drop-out from Milligan’s life
Where Have AU The Bullets Gone? By Spike Milligan. Penguin, 1986. 283 pp. $9.95 (paperback). Spike Milligan’s fourth volume of war memoirs came out in'l97B and now "in response to pressing demand from the Inland Revenue” he has produced a fifth volume. It is a pity the Inland Revenue Department did not get off his back. - n
This book is disappointing compared with earlier voluraes, providing more of the Milligan humour, but seemingly now with less warmth and more sourness. Maybe this is just because Milligan and/or I are getting older;
some of his jokes have less impact these days.
"Where Have All The Bullets Gone?” covers a period of Spike Milligan’s lifq in which he launches enthusiastically and successfully into music, and, op a more limited scale, comedy.
However, little else happens — at least in the 200 pages I managed to read. While the devout may enjoy this book and volume six promises more lively reading, I’ll drop out, footsore, from the long march through Milligan’s life.—Barry Holland.
