Meat saves prices
Fluctuating meat prices helped save “The Press” shopping “basket" $4.33 this month, despite several price increases. Meat prices made up the bulk of the savings, with lamb leg chops costing $2.35 less. Steak mince, on. the other hand, cost 2c more. The fluctuation is caused by meat being bought by auction. Other price decreases occurred with margarine (sc), bread (sc, depending where you buy it), detergent (sc), cheese (90c) and peaches (1c). These offset the price rises for chicken (24c), beef sausages (20c), tea (19c), sugar (16c), biscuits (sc), pet food (2c), cornflakes (1c), and bacon (He). It should be noted that, the beef sausages, cheese and margarine were returning to previous prices.
Tea has not dramatically increased in price — rather we felt it was time we changed the brand of our “basket” tea to one which is more representative of shoppers. It is still one of the cheaper brands.
