Aquino endorses Ramos
NZPA-Reuter Manila
President Corazon Aquino yesterday threw her full backing behind the military Chief-of-Staff, General Fidel Ramos, scotching reports that the man who helped put her into power would be ousted in an army shakeup.
“There is no basis to replace him. He stays on until the end of his threeyear term,” Mrs Aquino
said. That term expires in 1989. The “Manila Chronicle” newspaper reported on Tuesday that pressure from senior military commanders and younger officers was building up on Mrs Aquino to retire General Ramos because of his supposedly “weak and vacillating” leadership. It said a confidential report from an intelligence group, intended for
submission to Mrs Aquino, criticised General Ramos for failing to check factionalism in the military, triggering several mutinies and coup plots. General Ramos, a 58-year-old West Point graduate, helped lead a civilian-backed military revolt that ousted the former ruler, Ferdinand Marcos, in February, last year and thrust Mrs Aquino into the presidency.
