Hagler stripped of W.B.A. title

NZPA-AFP Panama Marvin Hagler, the undisputed champion, has been stripped of the World Boxing Association version of his title in a dispute over his proposed “fight of the century” clash against Sugar Ray Leonard. Alberto Aleman, chairman of the W.B.A. championships committee, announced the decision in Panama yesterday. Hagler has been'given 30 . days in which to appeal. The money-spinning Hagler-Leonard clash, due to take place in Las Vegas in April, is under World Boxing Council jurisdiction and has not been approved by the W.8.A.,

whose officials have criticised the fight on medical and technical grounds. Leonard, out of the ring for four years apart from an unconvincing comeback fight in 1984, is a former world welterweight and lightmiddleweight champion. He is not a genuine middleweight, say the W.8.A., and is not ranked in the top 10 in any division. Though passed fit by doctors, Leonard has had surgery on both eyes and the W.B.A. is not convinced he is fully fit. In 1982 he announced his retirement after surgery on a detached retina.
