Emigration scheme upsets Falklanders

NZPA-Reuter Port Stanley

Britain has launched a new scheme to encourage more people to emigrate to the remote Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, a move that has angered some islanders because of a chronic housing shortage. Under the scheme, specially vetted applicants will be given free single air fares to the islands, assistance with selling their homes in Britain,

and refunds for shipping their possessions. They will also be given priority for housing — a concession which has angered., some,, of the

islands’ 1902 existing residents.

The housing shortage is caused partly by the influx of workers drafted to build the huge new airport and barracks at Mount Pleasant as well as the presence of some 3000 British troops. Most property is Gov-ernment-built, controlled by either the Falkland Islands Government or the Development Council, which is promoting; new industry. ■ -

The British Government is anxious to increase the population of the Falklands, over which Britain anjp Argentina- fought a war in 1982. .
