$750,000 pledged in Canty appeal
PA Wellington About $750,000 has been pledged in an appeal to raise $2.5 million for an advanced engineering centre at the University of Canterbury. The appeal, launched at a function in Wellington on October 30 last year, brought promises of more than $250,000 before Christmas. The ogahisers hope for about $1 million from the profession and from Canterbury graduates, with the rest provided by the industry. The money is expected to be provided on a fiveyear basis in most cases. The campaign will end on March 17, in time for the university’s Engineering School centenary on May 10. The centre, "to promote excellence and innovation in engineering,” would bring a bit of “Kiwi magic” to New Zealand industry, said the appeal’s executive officer, Mr George Bridges, yesterday.
