Complaint about shop
Some Aranui shopkeepers are concerned about the Nga Hau E Wha National Marae’s retail trade. The Christchurch City Council is seeking a legal opinion about the marae’s vegetable shop in Pages Road, after other businesses in the area lodged a complaint. The Acting City Planner, Mr John Dryden,
said the opinion would be put before the next townplanning committee meeting at the end of the month. Shopkeepers were concerned that the marae’s shop would need a special licence to trade in the residential area, and was breaching the licence by reselling vegetables bought at markets rather
than produce it had grown itself. Mr Dryden said no special licence was needed because the marae had a Cultural 2 zoning in the District Scheme. An opinion was being sought about whether the scheme’s provisions permitted the sale of • food products under that zoning^ ___________
