PA Wellington Members of Parliament greeted a visiting Korean parliamentary delegation when the House sat at 2 p.m. * yesterday. The Leader of the House, Mr Palmer, outlined Parliament’s business for the coming week. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, welcomed back Mr N. P. H. Jones (Nat., Invercargill), who was admitted to hospital last year for the treatment of a brain tumour.
Four petitions were presented, calling on Parliament to dismiss the members of the Abortion Supervisory Committee and replace them with people "willing to have regard for the rights of the unborn child.” The petitions were from Clive Michael Moase and five others, presented by Mr C. R. Marshall (Lab., Wanganui); St Patrick’s parish at Kaiapoi, presented by Mr R. J. Gerard (Nat., Rangiora); Patricia Cox and 10 others, presented by Mr R. G. Boorman (Lab., Wairarapa); and the parish pastoral council of Our Lady of Lourdes, Palmerston North, presented by Mr T. A. de Cleene (Lab., Palmerston North). The annual reports of the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand, Ltd, and the Small Business Agency were tabled. Ministers answered nine questions. The Speaker, Dr Wall, declined an Opposition request for a snap debate on the United States’ decision not to renew a defence logistics agreement with New Zealand. However, he allowed another Opposition request for a snap debate on gang contract work schemes. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, then began the debate. When the two-hour debate ended, the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, moved to introduce the International Terrorism (Emergency Powers) Bill. The debate was interrupted when the House adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. It continued when the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. The bill was later introduced without division and referred to the Justice and Law Reform Select Committee. The Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, then moved to introduce the Police Complaints Authority and Miscellaneous Amendments Bill. ■. The bill received its first reading by 45 votes to 30.
