Solar housing study result due this year
PA Wellington Results of a national programme to monitor the cost benefits and energy efficiency of passive solar houses should be available in August More than 24 houses in places as climatically different as Auckland and Gore are in the experiment co-ordinated by several Government departments including the Housing Corporation and the Ministry of Energy.
The Ministry of Energy’s assistant director, Mr David Haskell, said it was already known that an average priced house with “built to the sun” features offered savings on heating costs of up to 90 per cent The purpose of the exercise was to determine what design and materials should be used in solar houses . in different parts of the country. Mr Haskell said a
manual had already been distributed to architects detailing how “built to the sun" houses should be designed and a similar manual for builders should be ready by August With the correct design, materials and insulation and at no extra cost, it was possible to build a house that required no space heating yet was cool in summer, Mr Haskell said.
