Threat to petrol supply?
PA New Plymouth New Zealand’s petrol suppliers could be threatened by the Maui and Kapuni gas workers’ strike, now into its third day. While most of the 95 operators plan to picket the Oaonui production station and Omata tank farm today, the Ministry of Energy says it remains concerned about any dis-
ruption to the natural gas supply. “It is a very bad time for any disruptions to happen to (Synfuel) petrol, oil or condensate movements,” said the Ministry’s liquid fuels director, Mr Alan Jenkins. Although the Marsden Point refinery started producing at full capacity again last week-end, after problems in the gasolinemaking part of the plant,
petrol stocks? throughout New Zealand were at very low levels, he said. Any disruption to the natural gas supply would mean the closing of the Synfuel plant at Motunui, no Maui and Kapuni condensate produced and shipped to the refinery, and problems with keeping the nation’s vehicle fleet running.
