Govt to lift domestic butter regulations

PA Wellington Butter distributors will be able to compete directly on the New Zealand market when the Government removes the marketing regulations which have been in force since 1948, said the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill, yesterday. The regulations, which will be revoked from July 1, contained “clearly restrictive” aspects, including the licencing of butter

distributors for exclusive marketing districts by the Dairy Board. “The licences prevent the transport of butter between districts and, in return for the exclusive rights, require distributors to provide all customers with good service,” said Mr Caygill when addressing a dairy industry forum in Rotorua.

“This aspect of the regulations might have been necessary in the post-war period, but in the Government’s view is clearly not necessary today.” Mr Caygill said butter distributors should be free to compete with each other. “We are opposed to legally imposed distribution rights and the notion of so-called ‘orderly marketing’ imposed by regulation.”
