Blovinski popular fancy for first leg at Riccarton today

By

J. J. BOYLE

. Blovinski is almost everyone’s idea of a likely winner of the Lion Brown Handicap, first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Riccarton today. Mrs Greta Lalor’s big Palatable gelding brings impressive credentials to bear on today’s feature race. Since he won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Christmas Handicap on his home track on December 12 he has boosted his earnings by $78,000 on North Island tracks with a win in the Sherwood Motor Inn Handicap at Awapuni, then a third in the Manawatu Cup, followed by two close seconds at Trentham, one of them in the Foster’s Wellington Cup. Blovinski is top weight with 57.5 kg in today’s 2000 m race. He had 53.5 kg in the Foster’s Wellington Cup and 57kg when hp was priopii nut hv

the lightweight Beks in the 2200 m Terrace Regency Handicap on the first day of the Wellington Cup carnival. White Lip has done enough in her last two starts to place her high on the list of fancies, but she could manage only fifth in the Terrace Regency Handicap. White Lip’s two more recent runs produced thirds, one of them in the South Island Breeders’ Stakes (1800 m at Riccarton last Saturday.

Breeders’ Stakes form offers the Wingatuitrained Noble Ella as another of the strong chances over a bit more ground today.

Noble Ella has been so often the “bridesmaid” in the 'shadow of some talented performers. Connie Lawn just kept her out in last Saturday’s feature race, but Noble Ella would up impressively on her late charge, and the race could have

taken a different turn in another stride or two.

Aegean Princess would not have to improve out of sight on her Breeders' Stakes fifth to get right into the act, but she like the others which raced in heat and on a firm track last Saturday, might struggle to match the strength and talent of Blovinski.

Tim's Magic and Flowing Silver bring attractive form to bear on the Jim Beam Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, and if they run up to it they might quinella the 1200 m race.

Tim’s Magic is a newcomer at the meeting, but was a winner over the holidays. Flowing Silver is showing much of the talent displayed by his half-sis-ter Harbor Flo in her racing from the Garth Jackson stable, and goes into today’s race as a winner at his last two starts.
