Mr Edgar McKillop
PA Wellington Mr Edgar McKillop, who was responsible for many of New Zealand’s major public engineering projects in the 1930 s and 19405, died in Paraparaumu, recently. He was 91. Mr McKillop was educated in Southland and at the Canterbury University College School of Engineering. He joined the Public Works Department in 1911. For many years he wojjked on road,
and irrigation projects, including hydro-electrical construction at Lake Coleridge and Lake Waikaremoana. He served in both world wars — in Samoa, Egypt, and France in World War I and on special duties in the Pacific in World War 11, rising to the rank of colonel. When Japan entered hostilities, he was appointed deputy commissioner of defence construction and worked with American and New Zea-
land forces in the South Pacific. In 1944 he was appointed Commissioner of Works and permanent head of the Ministry of Works, a post he held until his retirement in 1955. Mr McKillop was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1942 and the C.M.G. in 1953. After his retirement, he continued as one of the three Government directors of Tasman Pulp and Paper Company, Ltd. He 1966.
