Bedding shop owners fined

The owners of two Waterbed World shops in Christchurch were convicted of breaching the Shop Trading Hours Act and fined $4OO in the District Court yesterday. The Labour Department prosecuted the shops, in

Riccarton Road and Colombo Street, for opening late at night on the eve of the introduction of Goods and Service Tax.

. Under the trading hours act, shops are not allowed to open between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. ‘

The owners, who admitted the charge, said the shops had remained open in response to public demand.

YOUTH SENTENCED A youth, aged 16, was

sentenced to 30 hours community service and placed under Social Welfare supervision for eight months when he appeared in the Children and Young Persons Court on charges of breaking and entering, ■ and assault.

He was found to have broken into a woman’s home in Avonhead Road on December 20, and to have assaulted the woman, aged 57, with intent to facilitate his escape after committing a burglary. Judge Eric Anderson said the charge was very serious and if the youth was not prepared to “measure up” a Social Welfare officer would be required to bring him back before the Court.
