Top organist dies

NZPA-AP London One of Britain’s bestknown organists, Sir George Thalben-Ball, has died after spending the last four months in a nursing home at Wimbledon.

A favourite of the Royal Family, the Australianborn musician, aged 90, had died of old age, according to his family. Sir George was knighted in 1982 after a

well-publicised campaign by admirers which included letters of support from the Queen Mother and Prince Charles. He had been awarded a C.B.E. in 1967. He made music history by becoming the first church organist to win a gold disc for selling a million copies of a record, Mendelssohn’s “Hear My Prayer,” which he made in 1927.
