Oyster survey to resume

Surveys of Foveaux Strait oyster beds infected with the parasite bonamia will resume this month.

Fisheries scientists, led by Dr Bob Hickman on the Ministry of Fisheries’ research vessel Kaharoa will study the distribution and incidence of infection to monitor changes since the last survey in September.

They will also examine the relationship between oyster condition and infection and the extent to which bonamia kills the oysters.

Two researchers will work onshore in Bluff processing oyster samples caught each day for further examination by light and electron microscopy.
