Cost of recreation

Sir, —God save New Zealanders from the hand that seeks us out for a fast buck. Much of our outdoor recreation is becoming more and more limited, available only to those who can afford it There was a time, before we were caught enjoying ourselves, when we could round up the kids, throw a pack on our backs and take to the hills, secure in the knowledge that the best things in life are not necessarily connected to-, a profit and loss account. The >7OO per cent rise in

hut fees is irresponsible in that trampers left out in the cold will take unnecessary risks so that they can ’ continue to do what they enjoy. Future assessment of the cost, human and monetary, will prove that some things are better left alone. — Yours, etc., CHRISTINE M. SPENCE. January 9, 1987.
