Wellington Cup hopefuls on trial at Awapuni today

Special correspondent Wellington For the Matamata trainer, Tony Gillies, and the Takanini trainer, Ray Verner, today’s $30,000 Sovereign Lodge Marton Cup at the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting at Awapuni will have a look of “deja vu” about it. Last year Gillies prepared Fort Cheval to win the race. Verner had Lord Vegas in, hoping for a' win and a chance to start into the Wellington Cup. Fort Cheval won, Lord Vegas finished second, and Fort Cheval went on to Trentham to start favourite in the 3200 m race, but finished down the track after missing the start. Today Fort Cheval and Gary Grylls, last year’s winning combination, join forces again on a course that has been kind to the five-year-old. Verner will saddle up the mare, Chickero.

Fort Cheval has won three races on the course and he comes here fresh from a failure in the Auckland Cup. In that run he was wide all the way and faded. Before, though, he turned in a fine effort to beat all but Lomondy on Manawatu Cup day. Double Lang, (from Wingatui) the winner of the Woodville Cup last week, will be a big chance as well. He will carry the top weight of 55kg in the race but after his effort last week, will rate highly. Blyme, another South Islander, also looks to be comfortably in the Cup field. His run today will be his first since a dogged late run for fifth in the Ellerslie feature. The race top weight, Blovinski (56.5 kg was scratched yesterday. His connections advised the club that the weight was the reason for his withdrawal.

Mares, Milldewe and Amythest, have to be respected. Milldewe, the Wanganui Cup winner, won the Stratford Cup and is to race at Wellington. Amythest was an excellent second at Woodville. It was an encouraging return to form. Northern gallopers, Clear Gold, Guess and Mighty Vain are also in the field. They do not have Wellington assignments, but all look to be in good form. Clear Gold was third in the Clifford Plate; Guess first at Awapuni and then third in the Woodville Cup; while Mighty Vain was first, then relegated to fourth from second, in Shannon’s Leopard Cup. Beaver Boy, Infantry, Lord Jekyll, Smart Offer and Tauherenikau winner, Fred’s Fortune would do their cup prospects no harm by winning as well.
