PA Timaru Canterbury took the boys competition and Auckland the girls competition on the final day of the BP 16s national teams tennis tournament at Timaru yesterday. While Canterbury battled to a three-matches-aU, seven-sets-to-six win against Auckland for the boys title, Auckland cruised to a comfortable 6-0 win against Northern Districts in the girls event Canterbury’s Brendon Furness and Andrew Bruce were the pick of the victorious boys team. Canterbury finished ahead of Northern Districts, which enjoyed a 6-0 win against Central Districts, to take second place. Auckland was third. Tracey King and Lynette Johnston were two of the best performers in the strong Auckland side which took the girls title. Results of yesterday’s matches (with final placings in parentheses): Boys: Canterbury beat Auckland, 3-3 (7-6); Northern Districts beat Central Districts, 6-0; Waikato beat Wellington, 4-2; Southern beat Nelson, 6-0.
