Obituary Mr H. S. Ingram

Mr Henry Stewart Ingram, of North Canterbury, died recently. He was 102.

Mr Ingram died at Oxford Hospital on January 8. He was born in Glasgow in 1884 and came to New Zealand in 1908. His family first lived in the North Island but soon moved to Hawarden.

In 1914, Mr Ingram joined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and fought during World War I in Gallipoli. He was wounded during the fighting and was sent to England to recover.

At the end of the war, Mr Ingram joined other Anzacs who were invited back to Turkey as a goodwill gesture.

In 1919 he married Nettie Reid who had arrived in New Zealand from Scotland in 1907.

Mr Ingram began farming in Culverden in 1922. He mainly ran sheep and started one of the early Corriedale flocks.

During World War II he served in the Home Guard in the Amuri area. He moved to Christchurch in 1945 and worked for Pyne, Gould, Guinness in a wool store. He retired from the job in 1958. . ' After his wife died, Mr Ingram moved to Darfield to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Mona and Gordon Wright, in 1974.

Mrs Wright said he spent much of his time gardening and reading until he was admitted to Oxford Hospital in 1981.

He continued to be an avid reader until his eyesight failed about three years ago. Mr Ingram is survived by his daughter.
