Cash grant from Japan
PA Auckland Japan will make an immediate cash grant of SUSSO,OOO to the Cook Islands, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Mr Lange, announced at the end of his talks with the Japanese Foreign Minister, Tdashi Kuranari, yesterday. In addition, Japan will send teams of experts, one team expert in flood
devastation, to help the Cook Islanders to clean up and restore services. Mr Lange said the talks had been extremely useful and confirmed Japan’s commitment to two-way trade with New Zealand and her commitment to the South Pacific.
Because Japan was New Zealand’s biggest two-way trading partner it was imperative that New
Zealand cultivate and maintain warm relations, he said.
He had been given an overview of the Japanese economy and its antagonism towards any form of protection, especially in agricultural trade. He said agricultural nations could expect a better consideration when international trade tariffs were next discussed.
