Meat industry in ‘fragile state’

PA Wellington The meat industry is in a very fragile state and progress toward unit costs and more market-led production is . lamentably slow, says the chairman of the Meat Board, Mr Adam Begg. Mr Begg said that 1986 was a year of upheaval and frustration for every-

body associated- with the industry. Meat producing farmers had had their worst season financially since 1960-61. They might expect a small increase in 1987, but this would be whittled away by inflation, he said. “The events of last season have weakened the confidence of all in the industry, which is now in a very fragile state,” he said. The industry was still afflicted with problems in the international marketplace — tariff barriers and quotas, diet and health lobbyists, and competition from other meats and protein products. Mr Begg called for a big boost to investment in the industry, more efficiency and lower unit costs, and the development of products tailormade for overseas markets.
