Terminating jackpot will prove crowd lure at Avondale today

Special correspondent Auckland

Biltmore and Single Shot stand out as prospects for the second-last and last of. the jackpot races at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting at Avondale today, but the first three events look about as open as they could be.

The jackpot pool is expected to reach $150,000, and it is considered likely to top $200,000, so a big crowd is guaranteed at the meeting, which is restricted to lesser class horses. An even bigger crowd could be anticipated but for the counterattraction of yearling sales at Hamilton. It is an unfortunate

clash and bad luck, too, that no opportunity exists for inter-track betting, which would have added much to the jackpot pool. The pool, for which betters will be gambling, is to start at $75,532, and with the jackpot having to be terminated an increase to around $200,000 seems a reasonable guess. Single Shot, a three-year-old colt by Imperial Seal, is emerging as a young horse of considerable promise and Biltmore, as he showed when winning at Avondale last Saturday, also has plenty of ability.

Last time Single Shot beat all except Dawn Music in a class 3 1600 m on the fourth day of the D.B. Auckland Cup meet-

ing and that was on top of a win, earlier at the carnival, over 1300 m. Single Shot takes on the Ltd Progressive today over 1400 m. His task has been made easier through the scratching of. Burmead Star, one of the other in-form acceptors. Biltmore, a model ofconsistency, has run a succession of solid races over 1600 m, giving t the impression he should have no trouble with 2200 m, which he will be trying in the Laser Progressive.

In the first two of the jackpot races Ashbridge and Zaroma could prove worth attention, and in the third, Dark Moments and Chi Soong have claims to be considered.
