Shaping up
This solution depends upon the puzzle being in the unlinked, 3-in-a-row state. Readers whose puzzles are in a muddle, or worse, in a seemingly irretrievable three dimensional tangle, should aim. to get their puzzles firstly, a 2 x 4-deep sandwich shape 1 .
By experimenting with the different ways the “sandwich” can be folded, unfolded, and the side squares manoeuvred as in fig. 5, the reader should eventually get the puzzle flat and into its starting position three unlinked rings in a row.
