Sir,—M. Creel (January 8) is contradicting facts when he implies that the Soviet Union has
no global ambitions. The Soviet Navy has expanded from a coastal defence force to a globally deployed over the last 20 years. Using forward bases in foreign countries and large replenishment ships, it is out to contest Americap supremacy on the seven seas.. Right now there are wars being. fought tor the control of this planet in Central America, Southern Africa, Ethiopia, Afghanistan and Kam- ♦ puchea, to name a few. As J. Gallagher suggests, New Zealand should play ho i role, however, minor, in thii sUper-Power rivalry, Geographically isolated from the rest of the world; we should use this natural advantage to promote peace, instead of “‘belhg bh accessory to tlie kllUng of Thir;d World citizens.—Yours, etc., i~. , • ■ TONY BANKS.--- ■...■?J, r .,• January 8, 198?. .
