M.P. to open new centre

The Canterbury Volunteer Coastguard Service will hold an official opening for its new headquarters on February 15. This will coincide with the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s open day at the port. The member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Mrs Ann Hercus, will perform the official opening. The new headquarters was built around the shell of the old building, mainly by weekend working bees, said the service’s public relations officer, Mr Tom Atherton. The Harbour Board had contributed $40,000 towards the cost of the building, and the Coastguard Federation had given the other $22,000. "The Harbour Board actually owns the building and leases it to us at a very low
