Ice thick round Ross

PA Wellington Morale on board the Greenpeace took a minor blow on Saturday with the latest ice condition report from the Ross Sea, said Mr Stephen Knight, a reporter on board. Early yesterday morning the environmental protest vessel received copies, of ice data based on American satellite information, and it showed ice conditions round Ross Island to be similar to last

year’s. The Greenpeace organisation failed to erect a base on the island last year because of thick and extensive ice round the island. While ice conditions were not as good as bad been hoped for, the organiser, Mr Peter Wilkinson, said it was far too early to predict success or, failure. “You can’t really’ assess whether you can get close enough (to Ross Island) till you get down

there.” The Greenpeace is at about 57 degrees south in a heavy swell and should reach the northern limit of the Ross Sea at 70 degrees south, in about five days. The second mate, Mr Bob Graham, said that there looked to be a clear passage through the outer sea ice which would be encountered at this point The proposed base campsite, at Cape Evans, is now surrounded by ice.
