Fishing contest win to woman
A Christchurch woman, Anna Miller, won the annual Smiths Qty Market surf-casting fishing championships, organised by the Cheviot Lions Club, and held at Nape Nape beach on Saturday. Her winning catch, a 13.6 kg conger eel, won her $6OO in cash, $4OO in fishing gear from the sponsoring company, and a championship trophy. A conger eel of 7.54 kg earned second prize for Bill Bond, also of Christchurch. He won $2OO in cash and $230 in fishing tackle. Last year the championship was won by Gary Scott of Kaikoura, and the family name was kept prominent this time with Mary Scott sharing third place with D. Coldal, Christchurch, both of whom caught 4.16 kg skates. The other three prizewinners in the main championship were Graeme Hall, 2.36 kg kahawai, R. C. Thome o.skg blue cod; L. A. Marley, 0.48 kg dog fish. Herrings figured in all the catches for the top three prizes for the junior championship for those under 16 on the day. The successful fishermen were Warren Palmer, 0.44 kg, 1; Sarah Allen, 0.34 kg, 2; Scott Ashdowne, 0.26 kg, 3. Another member of the Scott family, Natalie, won the $lOO prize for the best catch by a woman who had not already won a prize, with her catch of a 2.28 kg red cod. The Miller team from the Christchurch Fishing Club won the $2OO cash team prize and Norman Hills won $lOO for the best catch by a local fisherman. John Calder, Christchurch, won some of the sponsor’s products for the most unusual catch — a paddle crab. The organising club hopes to clear more than $lOOO, which will be used towards buying an additional emergency radio to be used by the Cheviot St John Ambulance and Civil Defence organisations.
