Royal Adder to continue domination of West Coast feature races today

Special correspondent ...-■I • Greymouth Fresh horses and an increased stake of $lO,OOO has added a new dimension to the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Westland Racing Club’s meeting at Hokitika today. West Coast Cup specialist, Royal Adder, looks to have returned to form at just the right time to continue her domination of feature races conducted on West Coast tracks over the last couple of seasons. The run of the In the Purple mare in the Kumara Nuggets on Saturday was admirable indeed as she was some 10 lengths off the pace just 800 m from home and got up to be within a half length and a long head from the winner, Palastone, at the line. The winner of the Hokitika Cup back in 1985, Royal Adder was last successful at Omoto in November but since then her form has fallen away. The improved run for third on Saturday plus the •renewed acquaintance with leading jockey Grant Davison for today’s race brings her right into cal-

culations in a field which has been disappointingly reduced because of scratchings. The fresh horse on the circuit, Sparkling Eyes, brings with her strong holiday season form; she was third at her last start over 2000 m at Waikouaiti. Reefton form proved to be a most reliable guide at Kumara and so the win of Charlie’s Pal in the Reefton Cup must augur well for his chances in today’s $lO,OOO feature. Consideration should also be given to Cappiemore, twice placed second in this race, and Keen Pell, the local horse, which is expected to measure up to this class. Rain fell in Hokitika yesterday but the forecast is for clearing weather and the rain to date will have had little effect on the track. The second leg of the double, the Lion Brown Handicap, has drawn a strong field, which as late as yesterday afternoon had not been weakened by scratchings. Kumara form-runners, Natural Star and Sound Note, again apear to be

strong chances while the beaten favourite on Saturday, Eridick, is to be tried in blinkers and this may assist the former northern sprinter to return to the splendid form he showed at Greymouth in November. A leading fancy is the freshened Beau Magnum. The Ray Pankhurst trained seven-year-old was allowed to miss Kumara after finishing third to Palastone and Tirana over 1400 m at Reefton last Wednesday and he has proven his class before on the Hokitika track. He was placed twice in the open sprint races in November. Chris Johnson retains the ride on Natural Star. His run pleased his connections at Kumara and further improvement is expected, while Sound Note is sure to be thereabouts, specially if the track softens. Lower down in the weights Smooth Shiela appeals as a lightweight hope. Her Kumara run was useful and she is a previous winner at Hokitika.
