The area of wind shadow during a race extends about six mast lengths downwind. In the case of a 12 metre the wind shadow, or foul wind would extend about 100m. The yacht to windward can keep its opponent covered by bearing down on it to keep it in the area of disturbance. To break the cover the leeward yachtmay try to bear away.
