Wages and education

Sir,—Your editorial of January 5 on wages and education surprised me, coming as it did from your office. Whilst undoubtedly the opinions expressed were made “überimae fide,” to me they indicated a narrow perception of the positive aspects of Sixth Form Certificate. The concern expressed that S.F.C. will not be of the “same standard of U.E.” has to be challenged. If 1986 can be used as an indicator, I would suggest that all sixthform students worked harder and longer to meet a greater expectation than in previous years. If the opinions which you expressed are representative of “parents, taxpayers and employers” what is clear is that further information needs to be made available to the public. Now that S.F.C. is a reality perhaps the “teachable moment” has arrived and some informative, investigative journalism could be a timely exercise. To this extent, the Department of Education, in whose name S.F.C. is issued, could perhaps be found wanting in falling to do this job adequately itself.—Yours, etc., JUDY MILLER. January 8, 1987. > ■i I
