Computer will keep N.Z. maps current

PA ’ Wellington The new Survey and Land Information Department will get a $5 million computerised national mapping and land information system, said the head of the department, Mr Warren Hawkey. This will replace the more than 18,000 handdrawn, large-scale maps used by the department at present. These maps date back to the 1840 s and must be updated manually with more than 50,000 copies of new information every year. The new system would provide planners, developers, local bodies, Government agencies and private land owners with instant access to information on the shape, area and description of more than two million parcels of Crown and private land, road and street networks, and waterways, Mr Hawkey said. The contract to supply and install the system has gone to a Canadian company, Geo Vision Corporation, and New Zealand’s Progini Systems, with installation expected to start in March.
