Robert Cray tops awards
NZPA-AP Memphis Robert Cray swept most of the top honours, including “entertainer of the year,” in the 1986 Blues Awards hosted by B. B. King and Carl Perkins. In the seventh annual awards ceremony at Dick-son-Myers hall, Cray also took the contemporary male blues "artist of the year” award and the* blues "vocalist of the year” award. The song “False Accusations,” which Cray sang and co-wrote, was named blues “song of the year.” The contemporary blues album of the year
went to “Showdown," by Cray, Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland. Also among those receiving 21 awards were the Fabulous Thunderbirds, named the blues “band of the year.” John Lee Hooker was named best traditional male blues artist and his album, “Jealous,” won best traditional blues album. The contemporary female blues “artist of the year” went to Koko Taylor and traditional female blues “artist of the year” was awarded to Sippe Wallace.
