Duck eludes capture
An arrow embedded in this muscovy duck since Christmas has not stopped the bird being quick on its feet or in the water.
Repeated attempts by staff of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to capture the duck have failed. The duck usually swims in Horseshoe Lake at the end of Lakewood Drive, Burwood. Concerned residents in the area have been calling the S.P.C.A. since Christmas.
A society spokesman said the officers had tried to net the large duck on land and on the water from canoes. The duck has so far eluded every attempt to help it.
The arrow appears to be short and could have come from either a crossbow or a child’s bow. The spokesman said the society would continue its attempts to capture and help the duck. Because they had to travel from Hornby when called about the duck, society staff often found the duck had swum elsewhere before they arrived.
