Northern could surprise

PA Hamilton Northern Districts’ bold second innings effort at Nelson on Thursday has heightened interest in the Shell Trophy match against the defending champion, Otago, which starts at Hamilton today. Northern, after a dismal first innings performance, got within 16 runs of victory in chasing

the target of 361 set by Central Districts. That represented the first real success of the year for the Northern batsmen and they may again flourish on a Seddon Park pitch expected to favour the batsmen. Otago, which heads the Shell Trophy table with Central after its defeat of Auckland, has had several

good contests with Northern in recent years. Last year, however, Otago humiliated Northern by 10 wickets at Alexandra, losing just four wickets in the match in the process.

Northern Districts were yesterday seeking a replacement for the unfit Murray Child, who was 12th man at Nelson.
