Island nations on U.N. aid list

NZPA-AAP Suva The Pacific Island nations of Kiribati' and Tuvalu, formerly the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, have joined the United Nations list of least-developed countries. The listing was announced in Suva by the United Nations Development Programme (U.N.D.P.). A U.N.D.P. spokesman said the listing would allow the needy nations* access * to additional United Nations funds, and also would assist them in

obtaining support from non-traditional aid donors. Tuvalu has asked for support for its planned sAust27 million ($35 million) trust fund, the interest from which would pay the country’s running costs to compensate for reduced aid from Britain. Tuvalu is a string of nine coral atolls with a population of 7500 about 1100 km north of Fiji. Kiribati has 33 widespread Islands on both sides of the equator and the International dateline, with a population of about 60,000.
