Brosnan quinella at Timaru

It was a Brosnan quinella in the Bailey Mazda Mobile Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting yesterday, but it did not quite work out the way the public had predicted.

Tim Brosnan, recording his second driving success, reined Lord Kara (54 in the betting) home from the longshot, Nat (12-12), driven by his brother, Richard, while the favourite and third Brosnan representative, Trifecta, driven by Jack

Smolensk!, weakened out to finish sixth after having a perfect run until being left in the open over the last 800 m. All the honours were with Lord Kara, the older half-brother by Lordship to Frangelico, as he was parked in the open from the 1600 m before pressing on to the lead 800 m out. The seven-year-old kept going to win by two and a quarter lengths, recording a 2:4.6 mile rate for the 2700 m.

Nat, which trailed Trifecta until the straight, finished on along the

inner for second, with Maddie, back to the home turn, finishing strongly late to take third, ahead of another good finisher in Oh Douglas. Uncle Jasper, off the winning list for 20 months, gained an overdue win in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Larry Williams Mobile Pace.

The Boyden Hanover four-year-old, which tracked Hallfield Nat up to be parked from the 600 m, outstayed that runner to win by a length and a half in 3:28.5

(mobile 2700 m), lowering Lochout’s previous track record which was set in September.

The leaders ran their last 800 m in 59.3, the second last 400 m .in 28.5.

Uncle Jasper’s previous win had been in the $24,000 Standardbred Breeders’ Sires Produce Final at Addington as a two-year-old, when he beat Borderline, Farm Boss and Trident The Yaldhurst-trained entire has raced 23 times since for six seconds and three thirds.

Hallfield Nat, which has been trained by Robert Dunn at Broadfields for a month, was last early but moved up three wide with 1200 m to run before dashing clear 600 m out. J

Sir Avon, handy throughout, struggled on for third, four and a half lengths back, with Top Spot, eight lengths further away.

The win favourite. Spitfire, broke and lost his chance with 1500 m to run when enjoying a good run on the outer.
