NZ lamb prices firmer

PA Wellington Small quantities of new season's New Zealand lamb were released in Britain this week, the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board said in its weekly market report Shortages of some old season’s lamb grades have firmed prices. On the Smithfield market this week, New Zealand PL grade lambs were quoted at 62.5 to 64.5 p a pound (JNZ3.7B to $3.90 a kg).

Wholesale and retail sectors report an improving meat trade generally, with an increased demand for lamb and forequarter beef. Domestic lambs have shown dramatic price fluctuations over the last three weeks. Prices at live auction over the last week have dropped from 99 to 86p a pound (SNZS.9B to $5.20 a kg). A reason for this is a reported drop in quality. The U.S. beef market has started the New Year on a strong note, due mainly to

increased holiday season demand and reduced supply from local slaughter facilities. Also national fast-food chains are in the middle of advertising campaigns which contribute to the higher sales volumes of grinding meats. The average price for imported bull beef decreased by half a cent (from December 18, 1986, quotes) to $U50.975 a pound cif ($NZ3.97 a kg), while cow beef increased by half a cent to SUSO.94 a pound cif (SNZ3.B3 a ke).
