World guide

Collins World Atlas. Collins, 1986. 64 pp. $9.95 (pre-GST) (paperback).

(Reviewed by

Mavis Airey.)

At $9.95, this large-format, fullcolour atlas is remarkable value.

As well as 50 pages of maps, treating each continent systematically, it includes an index to 10,000 places and a world data section with facts and figures on countries, capitals, population, and physical features. One gripe — despite the compilers’ claims to have included "every part of the world in a balanced scheme that avoids any country or regional bias,” Britain and Australia get particularly generous treatment, while areas such as Antarctica barely get covered at all. On the plus side, a feature of the atlas I found particularly useful is the “postage stamp” key maps included on each map page to put the area in its continental context.
