Traditional Maori fishing
Fishing Methods and Devices of the Maori. By Elsdon Bost. Government Printer, 1986. 264 pp. Index, appendices. $29.95.
(Reviewed by
Philip Worthington)
This is the second reprint of a classic work that was first published as a Dominion Museum bulletin in 1929. Best’s treatise on aspects of Maori
life and culture need no introduction and in many fields remain a primary authority. This edition is again copiously illustrated with original photographs and is comprehensively indexed. The text also contains several glossaries and makes extensive use of footnotes. In style, as much as content, this is not easy reading: Best's approach was exhaustive rather than entertaining. Nonetheless, this is an essential work for the student of taha Maori and a rewarding book for those who can spare the time to study it. This edition is a quality publication that belies its price. Indeed, it is hard to see how such a fine book can be produced for the price;>or, alternatively, why some . other, less attractive offerings on the - bookshelves come so dear.
