Church windows

Silt—The “In a country churchyard” article on St Mary’s Church, Esk Valley (December 27), repeated often-made mistakes about one of its stained glass windows. Only one (not all) of the windows is by a William Morris. The window is not by the William Morris (as is implied), a famous designer and leading light 'of Morris and Company, one pf the most well-known Vic-stained-glass firms, founded in 1861. Instead, it is by William Morris and Company of Westminster, founded in 1904. This pompany was obliged to put “Westminster” on its windows because people assumed, incorrectly, that the firms were one and the same. The Esk Valley window has the word “Westminster” on it in the signature at the bottom. — Yours, etc., : BRUCE COLLINS. January 5, 1987.
