Wool down at Napier
PA Wellington Fleece and secondshear wool prices fell up to 2.5 per cent at the Napier wool sale this week. The full catalogue of 35,107 bales was offered to a fully representative bench of buyers at the sale — the first of 1987. The offering was made up of 39 per cent fleece wool, 30 per cent second shear, 14 per cent lamb’s wool, 5 per cent combing oddments and 13 per cent clothing oddments. Compared with the December offering, fleece wool was slightly better coloured. Some attractive good coloured lamb’s wool was on offer. These lots received good competition. Bidding was widespread which indicates that the
recent good demand has continued. The official report said the strengthening of the New Zealand dollar reduced rates. Compared with the last sale held in Wellington on December 19, fleece wool and second-shear were up to 2.5 per cent cheaper, combing oddments were fully in buyers’ favour and clothing oddments 2.5 to 5 per cent cheaper. Lambs’ firsts were in buyers’ favour to 2.5 per cent cheaper and seconds up to 2.5 per cent cheaper. Main competition was provided by China, Eastern and Western Europe, New Zealand mills and local merchant scourers, with support from Asia on lambs’ wool. The market indicator was 408 c a kilogram.
