3500 Expected at Hui
PA Wellington About 3500 people are expected at the opening of a national kohanga reo hui in Ngaruawahia later this month, the Kohanga Reo Trust said. Mrs Carol Love, of the Te Kohanga Reo Trust, said the number would drop, to about 2000 parents, helpers and kaumatua (elders) for the threeday hui which will emphasise tribal districts making decisions about
kohanga reo in their own areas.
The trust board hoped to see 1500 kohango reo established by 1992, she said.
At present there are 466 kohanga reo around the country, catering for about 9000 children. The hui, at the Turangawaewae Marae, will run from January 23 to 26, and is being organised by the Kohanga Reo Trust, which co-ordinates kohanga reo development.
