Father and son to play organs

A father-and-son duo will play two historic organs in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday. Don and Paul Whelan will play the cathedral’s Bevington organ, built in 1870, and Halmshaw organ, built in 1878. The music for their twilight concert will include works by de Grigny, Bach, Franck and Vieme. Don Whelan is the musical director for the cathedral. His son is a second-year voice student at the Wellington Polytechnic. Paul Whelan, aged 20, won a scholarship to compete in the 1987 Sydney Sun Aria contest at the Dame Sister Mary Leo contest last year. He also gained a $lOOO Petrocorp scholarship and $6OO scholarship from the New Zealand Opera Society. Paul Whelan also plays the viola. The hour-long concert will begin at 8 p.m.
