Crucial cricket match
The final outcome of the national second Xis cricket championship might well depend on the result of the Canterbury B and Northern Districts B match which starts at the Ashburton Domain today.
Canterbury B has started strongly in defence of its title, taking maximum points against Central Districts B and achieving an outright result against Auckland B on Sunday in spite of conceding first innings points. Northern Districts B, although eight points in arrears,, is Canterbury B’s closest rival in the championship. It gained first innings from Wellington B and took the full 1* points against Otago B after scoring the winning run off the last ball of the match.
Points after two of the five rounds: Canterbury B 28, Northern Districts B 28, Wellington B 11, Auckland B, Otago B 4, Central Districts B I.
Three changes have been made to the Canterbury squad for the game. Both the opening batsman, Justin Boyle, and the all-rounder, Mark Priest are suffering from a virus and will not make the trip to Ashburton. Also out is one of the bowlers, Greg O’Reilly, who leaves today with the'Canterbury Kiwis for their Australian tour.
The medium-pacer, Bill Lawrence, has returned to the second XI, with Richard Hadlee now available for the Shell Trophy side, and the other new players in the 12 for Ashburton are Danny Halligan and Henry Richards.
