“Fields of Fire” is the title of a four-hour television drama serial being made in Australia by Zenith, the film-making arm of Britain’s Central TV. It is based on the novel, “Cane," by Michael Joseph and Robert Donaldson.
The story is set in the 19305, tracing the hardships, friendships and passions of a young Englishman who goes to Australia to work in the canefields, where he has to prove himself.
The budget for the serial is $5 million and it has already been sold to Kerry Packer’s Channel Nine Network in Australia. The cast is entirely Australian and more than 1000 extras have been hired for some of the : crowd scenes.
