Bulk cargo carriers drop tonnage
Tonnage handled by bulk cargo carriers handled by New Zealand ports for the year ended September 30, 1986, dropped 13.5 per cent, compared with the previous year.
Container ships handled 3.1 million tonnes, 6.5 per cent less than last year's record 3.3 million tonnes.
The figures were recently released by the Waterfront Industry Commission.
The total quantity of cargo handled in New Zealand ports by waterside workers was 15.2 million tonnes. This was 1 million tonnes, or 6.7 per cent less than the previous year. There was an over-all improvement of 3.5 per cent in the rates of work, and a 3.7 per cent decrease in manpower required per tonne. ARRIVALS Nil. DEPARTURES Nil.
