Murder charge

The name of a man charged with murder arising from the fatal stabbing of another man in a house in Avonside last Saturday was released for publication on Wednesday on his second appearance on the charge, in the District Court. The defendant was Donald Thomas McGillivray, aged 26, a solo parent. He was charged with the murder of Sheldon William Thom, aged 27. On the application of defence counsel, Mr P. H. B. Hall, Judge Frampton remanded the defendant to January 14. Mr Hall, seeking the remand, said he had made arrangements for a

psychiatrist to see the defendant. This might take some time.

He also sought continuation of the order of suppression of name, which had been made on McGillivray’s first appearance on Monday after counsel said there might be some psychiatric background. The Judge said he did not consider there was any justification to continue suppression of name, which usually was granted when there might be some question of a defendant’s unfitness to plead to a charge. Mr Hall said there was no question of that, and did not pursue the application.
