Lomondy returns to Awapuni today

Special correspondent Wellington A year ago, on a soft track, Lomondy could do no better than finish tenth of the 13 runners in the Evening Standard Manawatu Cup. A year later he comes back to the Manawatu course a stronger galloper, t and even though he will carry the j topweight of 57kg he must be given a royal chance of winning the first j $lOO,OOO handicap ever run on Awapuni, at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting ’ today. I Last year Lomondy had 52kg, so his J rise in weight also reflects his rise in stature. Lomondy has gone on to win > both the Adelaide and Caulfield Cups j and he finished eighth when the favourite in the Melbourne Cup. . Blovinski just beat Double Lang in the Sherwood Handicap last week. Both will be good chances, though Noel Harris will ride Blovinski instead of Double Lang this time. Double Lang has only 50.5 kg. Last year’s winner, Whitole, is in the race again. He made a little ground late last week to finish sixth. He has 53.5 kg, .skg less than last year. Milldewe (second last year) and Chance for Gold (third) are both in the field again. Chance for Gold didn’t have much luck at Otaki last time. After winning the Wanganui Cup, the mare failed to flatter in the Avondale race, but she is capable of much better. The second .leg at Awapuni is the $12,000 Radio 2ZA Handicap (1400 m and the outcome looks to be wide open.

Commissionaire and Shannon are among the most notable runners. Commissionaire will be having his first run since the Cambridge Stud International at Te Rapa last February, while Shannon, after a fighting fourth in the Bayer Classic will be looking for better fortune. Kosha, the Coober Prince mare, won fresh at Awapuni, but has had little luck in outings at Levin and Trentham. Her younger half brother, Scorching Bay, beat her at Trentham and then was a handy fourth at Otaki last start.
