Wairau Lagoons open to public

BLENHEIM REPORTER One of Marlborough’s few wetland areas is now accessible to the public. The Lands and Survey Department has built a walkway in the Wairau Lagoons area so that the public have the chance to see the lagoons, which are abundant with interesting marine and bird life. The three-hour walk is suitable for families, although there is a warning that summer parties should carry drinks with them.

The Wairau Lagoons were formed about 6500 years ago and are renojwned as a breeding ground for fish. It is

estimated that .about 70 bird species live in the area.

Added attractions on the walkway are the wreck of the Waverley, a former coastal freighter, and moa hunter sites on the Boulder Bank and the Wairau Bar.

It is thought that Maoris lived in camps at the mouth of the Wairau River about 1000 years ago. From these camps many hunting expeditions for small moa were mounted.

Visitors are warned that the moa hunter sites are protected and any interference with them,is illegal. *
